It is an overlay of the 416 and 647 area codes which serves the city of Toronto and its surrounding areas, including the downtown core, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and parts of York and Durham regions. The 647 area code was put into service on March 25, 2001 as an overlay of area code 416. This means that both area codes are now used in the same geographical region, and that new phone numbers may be assigned area code 647 even if the caller is located in an area that had previously been served by area code 416.
